The North York Suzuki School of Music, formerly the Seneca Suzuki School of Music, has been located in the North York area of Toronto for over 25 years. It is a non-profit organization and is run as a cooperative by the teachers and their administrator. Although following the Suzuki pedagogy, the teachers have the artistic freedom to tailor the curriculum to the needs of the students enrolled.
Our faculty members are highly skilled and dedicated professionals. They continue to be involved with teacher training, workshops, Suzuki conventions and Institutes to keep abreast of ideas and experiences that will help them in their teaching practices.
We try to encourage parents of younger children (up to Grade 4) to attend lessons during the day when the child is less tired. The child is not penalized for this as the Education Act of Ontario allows children to be absent for one half day per week for music instruction.
Our school year totals 36 weeks. Students also receive anywhere from 26 to 30 group classes during the school year. During the summer, teachers offer days that they are willing to teach, and parents may sign up for as many lessons as they wish. Most teachers have 3 studio recitals per year, plus there is a Christmas and Year-End concert. Violin students perform these two concerts in their group format. Recitals are held at the school and are a casual affair. Concerts are more formal. Violin students have a dress code for the concerts.
Instrument instruction is available in piano, violin, viola and cello.
